Manushag Powell
Manushag N. “Nush” Powell is professor and chair of the Department of English at ASU.
A lauded administrator and expert in parliamentary procedure, Powell studies and has taught courses on 18th-century British literature and culture, historical publishing, women’s periodicals and narratives of piracy. She is the author or editor of four books, including “British Pirates in Print and Performance” (with Frederick Burwick, 2015) and an edition of Daniel Defoe's “Captain Singleton” (2019). She is also the author of the Wondrium “The Real History of Pirates” course, and has an essay on pirates and hook prosthetics in the Digital Defoe journal.

There are big gaps between the legend and the reality. So, what I’m interested in is how you get from 'A' to 'B' because, unlike dragons, which I also teach about, pirates aren’t invented. They’re totally real. And you can see a legend being built.
