Claire Lauer
Claire Lauer researches how people understand and engage with complex scientific information, particularly around water, drought and environmental sustainability.
As user experience architect for ASU’s $45M Arizona Water Innovation Initiative, Lauer develops research-based communication strategies, including AI chatbots, virtual reality experiences and museum exhibits, to help communities better understand water conservation and advanced water purification. She also studies data visualization, science communication and how people interpret charts and graphs, including how misleading visualizations influence public understanding.
Lauer is a professor of technical communication and user experience. She is also a past chair of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on the Design of Communication.
In the news
There is a lot of misinformation in the public sphere related to water purification, and as educators, we know that complex scientific explanations often struggle to break through while simple visualizations can bring clarity.
