David Hondula's research focuses on the societal effects of weather and climate with an emphasis on extreme weather and health. As associate professor in the School of Geographical Science and Urban Planning, his recent projects include statistical analysis of health and environmental data sets to learn more about how high temperatures affect human morbidity and mortality, especially within urban areas, including Phoenix. His latest research considers how to facilitate effective governance and communication strategies for climate adaptation with the aim of reducing unnecessary weather-related illnesses and deaths.

Hondula is the director of the Association of American Geographers' Climate Specialty Group and is a member of the American Meteorological Society.
