Tempe, Arizona, Jan 13, 2025 – The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) has awarded the Arizona State University (ASU) Police Department $49,424 in grant monies for the mitigation of driving under the influence (DUI), excessive speeding, and pedestrian/bicycle related offenses.

“The continued support of the GOHS is always appreciated as these grants make a significant impact in our department's mission of providing a safe environment for the ASU community to live, learn and engage.” says Police Chief John Thompson.

The ASU Police Department received three grants from GOHS this fiscal year. These grants are

  • A $20,124 DUI enforcement grant to cover the costs associated with DUI task force deployments, the purchase of preliminary breath tests (PBTs), blood kits, phlebotomy supplies, and additional equipment needed for DUI patrols.
  • A $24,300 speed enforcement grant for the purchase of a mobile radar speed device, and costs associated with traffic speed monitoring across ASU locations.
  • A $5,000 grant to cover the costs for pedestrian and bicycle enforcement to help combat pedestrian-related accidents.

ASU and its locations host over 2,000 planned events, and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. The grant monies awarded from GOHS will go to assist the ASU Police Department in reducing traffic-related issues in and around the ASU Tempe, West Valley, Downtown Phoenix and Polytechnic locations, ensuring the safety of visitors, students, staff, and faculty alike.
