Michael Varnum is a cultural psychologist who uses biology to decode why cultures differ—and how they change.
His lab studies how ecological factors such as population density, resource levels and disease outbreaks influence human behavior, cultural variation, and cultural change. Other interests include the adaptive function of fiction, how we might react to discovering the existence of extraterrestrial life, and using historical data to infer the mindsets of past populations.
