Matei “Matt” Georgescu's research focuses on human-environment interactions.

His research aims to improve the understanding and characterization of the effects of urbanization-induced landscape change, such as water-climate and air-quality impacts resulting from urban sprawl, as well as aid the development of potential adaptation and mitigation strategies. In addition, his work addresses environmental consequences of renewable energy expansion through the integration of physical, agricultural and socioeconomic elements. Georgescu uses many tools to investigate these topics including climate models, remote-sensing data and associated applications, and in situ weather and climate observations.

Georgescu is an associate professor in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning and a senior sustainability scientist in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability. He also is the associate director of research-based graduate programs in geographical sciences and urban planning.
