Jessica Early is expert in English education and secondary literacy.

Her research uses qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the teaching of writing and writing practices in diverse secondary education settings. She also focuses on the preparation and professional development of urban English Language Arts teachers.

Early is a professor of English and director of ASU’s English education program and the Central Arizona Writing Project, a local site of the National Writing Project.

Early's co-authored book, "Creating Literacy Communities as Pathways to Success: Equity and Access for Latina Students" (2018), offers a concrete model for researchers and teachers to create communities of practice for students. She is also the author of "Real World Writing for Secondary Students" (2012), "Stirring up Justice: Reading and Writing to Change the World" (2006), and co-editor of "Advances in International Writing Research: Cultures, Places, and Measures" (2012).
