David Burel
David Burel examines how technology shapes American culture, with research spanning the history of the automobile, tourism and military technology.
His work explores the cultural impact of recreational vehicles and SUVs, the evolution of transportation in the U.S. and the relationship between people and technology. Burel also studies smart homes, environmental architecture and the concept of the “home of the future.” His current research investigates the enduring connections between military veterans and technology, tracing how service members’ relationships with equipment, such as the World War II Willys Jeep, influence identity, memory and culture across generations.
Burel is a clinical associate professor and faculty head of applied humanities and interdisciplinary studies. He is also the author of “A History of the RV: From Tin Can Tourism to Motorhomes” and is currently working on a second book, “From Jeep to Canyonero”.
