He is a pioneer in the field of geomorphology due to his experience with field work, examining physical features of the surface of the earth and their relation to its geological structures. His work has been used to advise environmental and sustainable policy.
Heimsath is a professor for the School of Earth and Space Exploration and the School for the Future of Innovation in Society.
He has worked with the Peace Corps to develop water systems in Kenya, has received the NSF Postdoc Fellow award and was awarded the NASA Graduate Student Fellowship in Global Change Research.
