Outdoor Classes at Arizona State University

Amid the pandemic, faculty in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts have found creative ways to unite students. Joe Burgstaller, associate professor of trumpet, and Brian DeMaris, associate professor of music, opera and theater, have taken their classes outdoors. Taking precautions, including spacing of up to 18 feet between individuals and coverings for both faces and trumpets at all times, students can perform at ease and enjoy connecting with their peers. This also enables small audiences to safely gather and opens a channel of creativity during a challenging time.
