Sexual assault prevention and support

Arizona State University is committed to the wellbeing and safety of every member of the university community. ASU takes all reports of sexual misconduct seriously, investigates` thoroughly, and takes appropriate action to hold violators accountable and to prevent recurrences.

The university maintains a robust sexual assault prevention and education program. All new students are expected to successfully complete ASU’s Sexual Assault Prevention course as part of ASU’s orientation program. The course includes education on positive relationships, consent, bystander intervention, policies, and information on campus and community reporting and support resources. Additionally, units across ASU provide educational programming throughout the year, while student leaders assist with peer-to-peer engagement, education and support.

ASU supports victims and survivors of sexual violence by providing multiple reporting options, and various support methods so those seeking support can engage in the way most comfortable to them. Counseling is available 24/7 through appointments, walk-in service, open call and open chat (24/7 text and telecounseling), and by calling EMPACT’s ASU-dedicated mental health line at 480-921-1006. The university designed a comprehensive sexual violence prevention homepage to serve as the hub of support and information for the ASU community.

Responsive to the request of students, ASU transferred the victim advocate positions from the ASU Police Department to ASU Counseling Services, providing a more confidential space for those reporting a sexual assault, while also better aligning holistic care resources. ASU is also collaborating with the City of Tempe to establish a Family Advocacy Center that will serve as an added resource for victims to find support off campus, especially those who experience sexual violence off-campus and report it to Tempe Police.

The university conducts sexual assault investigations in a thorough, fair and impartial manner. Students are held accountable to the Student Code of Conduct, and if pursued by the victim, may also face criminal charges based on the evidence and facts obtained during the investigation.
